Chia is a miraculous seed with special nutritional properties for birds.

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) is a small oval seed (2 mm in length), light brown and native of Mexico, where its special composition and its beneficial properties for the physical condition were discovered hundreds of years ago . For centuries nutritious chia seeds were the staple of Southwestern American Indians.

Today, scientific studies show that chia provides a number of interesting nutrients, which makes the present nutritionists rediscover this miraculous seed that is quickly gaining a huge popularity both in food and in the animals. Currently Chia is grown commercially in Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Colombia.

The composition of chia is comparable to that of other mucilaginous seeds like flax and psyllium. Unlike flax, chia not contain anti-nutritional factors, as in the case of limited use flaxseed without prior heat treatment. Antinutritional factors are cyanogenic glycosides or linatina, vitamin B6 antagonists, which means that prevent vitamin B6 metabolism act. In addition, chia has a much nicer that flaxseed taste, so that the birds ingest more appetite.
Chia contains no less than 23% of polyunsaturated fatty acids, 18% of them in the form of linoleic acid. This makes the seed with the highest content of omega-3 fatty acids in the plant world. The omega-3 fatty acids are absolutely essential for humans and animals; among other things, increase resistance to diseases and have anti-inflammatory properties. Apart from this, chia oil is rich in natural antioxidants (such as chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid, etc.). Thus, chia oil has a strong antioxidant activity and prevents the oxidation of fats (rancid taste =). This explains that omega-3 fatty acids administered through chia are so stable and can be stored for a long time, unlike what happens with most of the other sources of omega-3.

Chia belongs, like psyllium and flax, the group of mucilaginous seeds. These seeds are really rich in mucopolysaccharides and are an excellent source of soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Soluble mucopolysaccharide are those which form a colorless mucus gel on the surface of the seeds, when they come into contact with water. When a handful of chia seed is introduced into a glass of water, it is observed that after a few minutes the glass is filled with a gel type pectic. These mucilages are beneficial to the intestines. First, they can retain up to 12 times its weight in water, which improves the quality and consistency of stools in case of diarrhea. Furthermore, mucopolysaccharides also form a slime layer on intestinal walls, so that pathogenic bacteria are annulled as to their harmful effects and bowel mucosa can recover faster.

Chia is also a good source of high quality protein with an excellent amino acid pattern. It is also rich in minerals (including a 0.65% calcium, a very superior to most other seed value); it is not surprising that this miraculous seed constitutes a great ingredient for the best mixes Prestige Premium bird.
